Mnangagwa denies threatening to track down lawyers

Government has dismissed as false and misleading reports in the private media claiming President Mnangagwa threatened to track down lawyers who represented rioters and doctors who treated people who were injured during demonstrations last month. MDC leader Nelson Chamisa (pictured) on Monday attacked President Emmerson Mnangagwa for allegedly meddling in the courts adding that the incumbent was more cruel than his predecessor Robert Mugabe. Chamisa was addressing the media outside the Harare magistrates’ yesterday. _* – NewZimbabwe*_

A BOLT of lightning struck dead three Mvurwi tobacco farmers over the weekend who were working in the grading shed at Muswite Farm. The trio, Tonderai Mungate (21) Onward Gede (16) and Jameson (22), all from plot number 74 at Muswite Farm, were burnt to death in a grass-thatched tobacco grading shed on Sunday. _* – NewsDay*_

FOUR suspected poachers were arrested at Cross Dete Business Centre in Hwange District and elephant tusks weighing 96 kilogrammes were recovered from them. GOVERNMENT says it will continue assisting farmers through the Command Agriculture programme until such a time the private sector can fund agriculture. This was said by Lands, Agriculture minister Perrance Shiri yesterday while giving a lecture at the Zimbabwe National Defence University. This is despite Finance minister Mthuli Ncube’s previous commitment to scale back on the programme. In several country reports, the International Monetary Fund has questioned the design and financing of the command agriculture programme, particularly the commitment to buy large quantities of grain at above-market prices, which is not cost-efficient. _* – The Herald, NewsDay & Kukurigo*_

GOVERNMENT has expressed satisfaction with progress towards resumption of operations at Shabanie- Mashava Mines (SMM) with asbestos production expected to start in July this year when de-watering of flooded shafts is expected to be complete. Mines and Mining Development Minister Cde Winston Chitando yesterday told the media that SMM’s revival was on track. Government has remained mum on the question of ownership after the company was in 2004 seized from businessman Mutumwa Mawere on charges of externalisation of foreign currency. The Reserve Bank was to later drop the charges but the business was never returned. Instead, the administrator, AMG Global, handed over 76% ownership to government and took 24% of the business for itself. _* – The Herald & Kukurigo*_

PARLIAMENT’S Committee of Standing Rules and Orders yesterday dissolved the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development and is set to unveil a Privileges Committee to investigate allegations that Norton legislator Mr Temba Mliswa and three others demanded a $400 000 bribe from a local businessman intending to mine in Hwange. _* – The Herald*_

MDC Mutasa South legislator Regai Tsunga has challenged government officials to change their mindset on the distribution of State-funded agricultural inputs which were distributed on partisan grounds, prejudicing opposition supporters.
